Audacity Logo Redesign

I was tasked to redesign the Audacity logo, an audio recording company. Their logo was outdated but the company was centered on modern technology, so I approached this project with intentions of modernizing the brand. Brand guidelines and applications are included.

Project & Company Details

Audacity is the world’s most popular free software for recording and editing audio. So if you’re producing music, a podcast, or just playing around with audio, Audacity is for you. It is available to download as a desktop app for Windows, macOS and Linux.

The Ask

I was tasked with creating a new logo for the brand that better related to their message.

The Approach

As they are known for their efficient and modern technology, I aimed to create a logo that better aligned with their company. As their old logo is rather outdated, I thought a modernized logo would be better suited for the brand.

Process

The above image shows the different iterations of the logo redesigned. The top three logos were all first iterations and the bottom logo is the final. The first three ideas all kept some aspect of the old logo intact. The sound waves in the first, the headphones and the sound waves in the second, and an over simplified version of both the sound waves and headphones in the last.

I believed the third logo was the most successful in keeping the brand’s identity alive while also balancing heavy modernization to the logo. I took the third logo and refined it by adding in two small rounded rectangles to the outside of the curve to mimic the headphones in a minimalistic way without abstracting the headphones too much. This became the final logo redesign.

Applications& Guidlines

After deciding on the final logo, I was then asked to create a few applications and a brand guidelines manual. Above is some of the applications, you can download the full brand guidelines manual and applications here.
