Urban Impact Magazine
I chose two non-profit organizations and designed a magazine that highlights their impact in urban communities. While the covers showcase a very minimal design, the spreads within communicate the environment of their respective non-profit organizations.
Project & Company Details
Urban Impact is a very short fictional magazine that covers non-profit organizations that operate in heavily populated metropolitan areas. The two stories in this issue cover Cafe Momentum and Grow Pittsburgh, two non-profits that operate in Pittsburgh.
The Ask
I was asked to create a magazine that covered two non-profit organizations in Pittsburgh, PA.
The Approach
I wanted to focus on nonprofits that work heavily with communities and showcase their impact in urban areas. After determining the target audience (high-middle class mean and women who are interested in donating or volunteering in community projects), the branding and designs aspects followed closely behind. I created the masthead, designed every aspect cover to cover, and wrote all the copy within the magazine.
Process
I wanted the masthead to perfectly capture the name. Therefore, I chose a modern but unique font for Urban, and a very bold san serif font for Impact. The spread designs are meant to reflect each nonprofit organization that it covers.
Cafe Momentum has a more sleek and modern aesthetic, represented by a similar color palette and very clean design. Grow Pittsburgh is much less clean, as the entire organization is based on community gardening. Therefore the Grow Pittsburgh story has a much more busy feel to it, including imagery of children gardening and raw vegetables.
